Clarksville, Indiana
In its recent revitalization project along Riverside Drive, the Ohio River town of Clarksville, Indiana, extended the Ohio River Greenway, created multi-use paths for bicyclists and pedestrians, added more street parking, improved area lighting — and replaced a 1995 playground at Ashland Park. The park’s new, inclusive, ADA-accessible playground was designed to eliminate barriers that prevent children with disabilities from exercising their right to play.
This more inclusive approach to community development was a significant step forward for the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department, which hopes to inspire other communities. Made possible with a grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, Ashland Park’s new playspace incorporates an inclusive ramped structure that allows wheelchairs and other mobility devices to access engaging, state-of-the-art equipment such as the Brava® Universal Swing, Konnection® Swing and AirVenture® Glider. It also features colorful Novo® Playful Furniture for resting and socializing, and the former playground’s old mulch surface has been replaced by easy-to-navigate synthetic turf surfacing. The play structure was sold by Snider Recreation, Burke's exclusive representative partner for Ohio, Indiana, Western Pennsylvania, and lower Michigan.
